Pentax HD DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE compared to the previous model has a slightly worse light, but it is equipped with a new autofocus engine.

The optical design of the new lens includes 14 elements arranged in 11 groups, including an element made of low-dispersion ED glass. Multilayer HD coatings are designed to provide better light transmission and less susceptibility to glare. The SP coating used on the front element reduces the adhesion of water and dirt, thus facilitating cleaning. The new lens uses a 9-leaf aperture, which closes to a maximum of f/22-32.

The most interesting novelty in the presented lens is the fast and quiet PLM engine. In combination with the rear focusing system, it allows for a clear acceleration of autofocus performance compared to the previous model. According to the manufacturer, AF is 8.3x faster for wide angle and 1.7x faster for longest focal length. The new motor also provides better sharpening precision, and the autofocus works most efficiently (especially in low light conditions) with the new K-70 SLR camera. It is also worth noting that compared to the previous model, the minimum sharpening distance has been reduced, which is 95 cm.

The new lens is 10% lighter than its predecessor and weighs 471 grams. Its housing has been fully sealed against adverse external conditions. The dimensions of the lens (at rest) are 89 × 77 mm. The diameter of the filters is 58 mm. Included with the lens we also get a dedicated sunshade.
