The quality of workmanship and mechanics is at a very high level typical for TTArtisan. I feel like there was no regret about the metal. The markings are engraved and filled with paint. As the lens is also advertised as an optics for filming, the focus and aperture adjustment rings are equipped with sprockets for the installation of the Follow Focus system. The sharpening ring puts a lot of resistance – for me a bit too much, while the wide range of rotation from minimum focusing distance to infinity ensures precision sharpening.

The aperture ring works without surprises and the distances between the values are arranged at equal distances. The tripod mount rim is removable; it's just a shame there is no Arca Swiss standard foot. The set comes with a screw-in metal sunshade, which is cool, but the cover is pretty shallow for such a long focal length.

TTArtisan 500mm F6.3 ED optical system

Usually telephoto lenses have practically no vignetting and here you can see the dimming of the corners of the image, but I put it on the notch of the small diameter of the Sony E mount, because I have seen a similar effect before. Remember that this mount was created for APS-C format sensors and is slightly narrow compared to Canon RF or Nikon Z mounts. Despite the use of ED glass in the construction, chromatic aberrations are visible. In the case of longitudinal, it partially helps to close to F11 and the transverse one must be corrected in graphic programs.

When it comes to sharpness, it must be remembered that in the case of such a long focal length as 500mm, the perceived sharpness is influenced by many factors, only one of which is the optical quality of the lens itself. For example, camera shake. It is true that the Sony A7R IV has matrix stabilization, but in the case of long telephoto lenses it is not as effective as stabilization in the lens itself. It is not easy to take a sharp picture with TTArtisan from your hand also because of the considerable resistance put by the focus ring. From a tripod it is easier, but it must be a solid tripod with a solid head, preferably a gimbal. Fortunately, the lens has an internal focusing system, so it does not change the length when sharpening.

The sharpness and contrast are decent at F6.3 and slightly improve when closed to F8.0 and F11. I would recommend shooting with these values, especially with close-up photos because the difference between focus at full aperture and when closed is clearer there than in infinity. Also the contrast is quite low at full aperture and closing it improves, The minimum focusing distance of 3,3 meters is good for a focal length of 500mm and gives a maximum magnification of 1:6,3.
