History:

The supersonic on-board fighter of the United States Navy with variable wing geometry, produced in the years 1972-91, entered service in 1972 and was withdrawn from it in 2006. It is still in service with the Iranian Air Force, the only country to which it was exported in 1976. It was a fleet defense, tactical reconnaissance and air superiority aircraft, and for close support tasks after adding bomb-carrying capabilities. The F-14s were first used in combat in 1981 during the US-Libyan confrontation over the Greater Sirte Bay. Then during the kidnapping of MS Achille Lauro in 1985, during another confrontation on the Greater Sirte Bay in 1989, Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006.
