Argon, being an inert gas, effectively protects the molten metal from the influence of air (oxidation), and its mixtures with CO₂ further stabilize the welding process and improve control over the weld. In soldering of galvanized metals and copper, the mixture of argon with low CO₂ content is ideal because it reduces damage to the protective coating.
