The AH-64 Apache (Apache from the Native American population) is a basic attack helicopter of the United States Army, designed to combat armored weapons and support ground troops. It was developed by Hughes Helicopters, then acquired by McDonnell Douglas. These plants were later purchased by the Boeing Company. Its predecessor was the Bell AH-1 Cobra.

In 1972, the U.S. Army announced a tender for the Advanced Attack Helicopter. 5 companies submitted their proposals, and the Toolco Aircraft Division of Hughes Aircraft (later Hughes Helicopters) Model 97/YAH-64 and Bell Helicopter Textron Model 409/YAH-63 qualified for the final. In 1976, Hughes' design was selected. The first flight of the prototype took place on September 30, 1975. The contract for production was signed only in 1982, and a year later the first serial copy was produced at the Hughes Helicopters plant in Mesa (Arizona). In 1984, Hughes Helicopters was purchased by McDonnell Douglas for $500 million and McDonnell Douglas became the manufacturer of the helicopter. In 1996, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing.
