Sigma 17-40 mm F1.8 DC | Art is the successor to the well-known and respected 18-35 mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art lens, the world's first F1.8 zoom lens. It is the world’s first zoom lens with a fixed aperture of F1.8 in the entire focal range, dedicated to mirrorless cameras with an APS-C sensor. The constant light of F1.8 not only allows shooting in difficult lighting conditions, but also provides extremely pleasing image blur (so-called. bokeh) while offering extremely high sharpness.

Compared to its predecessor, i.e. The 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art, Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC |Art lens not only achieves better optical performance, but also offers a larger focal range of 17-40mm while reducing its weight by more than 30% (up to 535g). All this dramatically increases its versatility as a standard zoom lens. In addition to the fast and quiet autofocus controlled by the HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) linear motor, the lens features an internal zoom mechanism and minimal focus breathing, providing exceptional performance for both static photography and video production.

Excellent image quality

Advanced optical design, which consists of m.in. 4 aspherical lenses and 4 SLD lenses (low refractive index) resulted not only in reduced size, but also excellent optical performance. With an emphasis on chromatic aberration and coma correction, the lens achieves high resolution even with the F1.8 aperture wide open, capturing delicate textures and fine details with stunning clarity. Thanks to the use of advanced simulation technology and Super Multi-Layer Coating coatings, flares and plates have been largely eliminated, which makes the lens provide rich, contrasting results in all conditions.

Perfect for photographers and videographers

The use of the HLA linear motor has influenced the quiet, fast and precise autofocus operation, not only in static photography but also during video shots taken on the gimbal or during vlogging. so-called “Focus breathing” has been greatly minimized, allowing for a smooth, natural-looking focus when recording videos. Thanks to the internal zoom mechanism, the total length of the lens remains unchanged, regardless of the focal length and focusing distance of the lens. SIGMA 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art is also equipped with a focus ring* for intuitive aperture control. When recording video footage, users can turn off the click switch for smooth, quiet aperture control.

* The Canon RF mount version instead of the aperture ring has a control ring (so-called. Control Ring). This ring does not have a click switch.

Like every lens in the Art series, the Sigma 17-40 mm F1.8 is distinguished not only by its high optical quality, but also by its extremely durable construction. Numerous seals protect the inside of the lens from dust and water drops*. Additionally, the front lens has a water- and grease-resistant coating, allowing for effortless shooting even in harsh environments.

*The object is not waterproof; with high intensity of water or dust, contaminants may penetrate.

All of our lenses and cameras are designed, manufactured and assembled at our only factory in Aizu, Japan. This on-premises production model is already extremely rare in today’s industry, where most imaging companies have opted to outsource to other countries to reduce costs. However, SIGMA believes that maintaining the entire production and assembly process in Aizu is essential for creating innovative, carefully thought-out and impeccably constructed products that meet the high standards required by professional photographers and filmmakers around the world.

Sigma chose Aizu as its main production base in the early 70s. Located at the foot of Mount Bandai in Fukushima Prefecture, about a four-hour drive north of Tokyo, Aizu has plenty of very clean water from mountain streams, which is essential for grinding and polishing lenses. The founder of SIGMA, Mr. Michihiro Yamaki, also attracted this area because of the employees who are famous for their craftsmanship, work ethic and attention to detail. Mr. Yamaki’s son, Kazuto Yamaki, now owner and CEO of SIGMA Corporation, maintains production in Japan with the same unwavering commitment.
