The B-17 Flying Fortress is the most famous American bomber from World War II. Heavy losses in 1943, with a total of 120 bombers shot down, led to the realization that earlier B-17 versions lacked sufficient defensive armament. As a result, the B-17G was equipped with a rotating turret featuring two 12.7 mm machine guns for more effective defense against notorious head-on attacks, and additional machine guns were installed along the fuselage sides. The crew could now defend themselves from all directions, giving the crews a reassuring feeling, which is also reflected in the nickname Flying Fortress. Although primarily used in Europe and the Middle East, it also provided invaluable service in the Pacific region for maritime patrols, reconnaissance flights, and bombing missions. A total of 12,731 Flying Fortresses were put into service, with 8,680 of the G version alone. The last B-17G left the factory on July 29, 1945. The B-17G-35-VE 42-97880 Little Miss Mischief was delivered on March 23, 1944, and was with the 91st Bomb Group, 324th Bomb Squadron in Bassingbourn, England, from June 7, 1944, to April 4, 1945, in service.
