5× optical zoom – why it’s the most important advantage
This is the only parameter in which an inexpensive compact really beats the smartphone. The phone in this price range is digitally closer, i.e. it simply cuts and enlarges a fragment of the frame – the stronger, the more mushy the image.
The FZ55 has a true optical zoom. The lens physically changes focal length from 28 to 140 mm, so at full close-up the image retains full resolution and detail. The difference can be seen wherever it is impossible to get closer: on a trip, at a concert, next to a child on the playground, next to animals.
The other end of the range is equally useful. The wide 28 mm holds the entire scene in the frame – a group of people at the table, the interior of the room, the panorama – without retreating or combining.
One hundred six grams that you actually take
The best camera is the one you have with you. The FZ55 weighs less than most smartphones and is less than twenty-three millimeters thick, so it slips into the jacket pocket, into a small purse, into the side pocket of the backpack.
The lens hides completely in the body, and the cover closes automatically – there is no protruding element that could scratch, and you do not have to remember about the cap.
Added to this is something appreciated especially for children and travel: camera shooting does not unload the phone. You’re back from a full-day tour with a full photo gallery and a phone call you can still call.
Services that do not need to be learned
It's a aim-and-press camera. There are no manual modes, knobs, or menus to get lost in — and that’s an advantage if you’re looking for equipment for a child, teenager, or yourself when photography is meant to be a pleasure rather than a hobby that requires learning.
Automation does its job. Detection of face, smile and blink makes sure that the portraits come out sharp and with open eyes. Just turn this feature on once in the menu and forget about it.
Live preview on the 2,7 inch screen allows you to crop comfortably, and after removing it, you will immediately check the effect and enlarge the fragment to assess the sharpness.
Full HD video with one button
Recording is triggered by a separate, dedicated button – without entering the menu and switching modes. You press and you already record what matters for scenes that last a few seconds: the first steps, candles on the cake, a dog doing something unexpected.
The camera captures images in Full HD 1920 × 1080 resolution with sound, saving it in MOV format. This is a resolution that is still the standard for playback on TVs, laptops and social media — movies do not require conversion or special software, you just need to lose them from the card.
During recording, live preview works on the screen, so framing is done exactly the same as with photos. You can also use the 5× optical zoom, which gives you an advantage over your phone when filming – you zoom in without losing quality and without digital blur.
The material has a characteristic, slightly strict aesthetic typical of compacts. Videos are not as smoothed and processed as from a modern smartphone and this is why this climate is appreciated by younger users recording vlogs and travel reports.
Practical note: videos take up much more space than photos, so with regular recording, you should consider a 64 GB card instead of 32 GB. The sound is recorded monophonically by the built-in microphone – for reports and video notes it is enough, but with the wind outside it is worth shielding the camera with your hand.
The Eye of an Expert
FZ55 is experiencing a second youth and it is worth understanding why. The younger generation discovered the aesthetics of photos from simple compacts — less smoothed than a phone, with character, without artificial sharpness and processing. This model has become one of the most popular in this category, because it is one of the few still produced by a recognizable brand.
This is a good first camera, just because of the simplicity. The child gets equipment that cannot be done wrong – there are no settings to spoil, and automation watches over the rest. There is also no risk that the camera will access the Internet and social media, which is a real topic on the phone.
It is important to remember that this equipment is consciously simple. There is no viewfinder, the stabilization is digital, and the 1/2,3 inch matrix is standard for this class. If you’re looking for a camera for low-light photography or for learning manual photography, this isn’t the model — and that’s not its role.
Tip: buy a memory card together with the camera, because the built-in 63 MB is enough for literally a few photos. For this application, a 32 GB class 10 SDHC card is enough – faster and larger will not give any advantage here. The manufacturer declares about two hundred photos on a charge, so for a full-day trip it is worth taking a powerbank; the camera charges via a regular micro USB cable, so you do not need additional equipment. When shooting with full zoom, hold the camera with both hands or lean against something stable, because the stabilization is digital and will not replace optical. Rip photos regularly and keep a copy off the card.
