Il-62 aircraft were introduced into the fleet of LOT Polish Airlines in 1972, thus enabling the launch of transoceanic connections. The first transatlantic flight was to Canada. In total, 7 Il-62 aircraft were incorporated into the fleet of LOT Polish Airlines. After the introduction of the modernized version of the Il-62M, the previously operated aircraft were replaced with a new version, leaving the Soviet side old aircraft in settlement. A total of 9 machines in the modernized version of Il-62M were incorporated into the LOT Polish Airlines fleet. All these aircraft were given the names of famous Poles. The introduction of these aircraft enabled the launch of new, previously impossible connections, but design errors, material errors and improper operational practices contributed to two tragic disasters.

Aircraft "Nicholas Copernicus" (unmodernized version Il-62, registry no. SP-LAA), crashed during the approach to landing at Warsaw Okęcie airport on March 14, 1980, when, among others, the star of the Polish music stage Anna Jantar was killed. On 9 May 1987, the plane “Tadeusz Kościuszko” (modernized version Il-62M, registry no. SP-LBG). The catastrophe in the Warsaw Kabacki Forest, in terms of the number of victims, is the most tragic such accident in the history of Polish aviation. Policy conditions made it impossible to change the supplier of aircraft, therefore, technical and operational changes were made in LOT Polish Airlines, increasing the level of safety.
