Exmor R 33,0 MP CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor

The advanced Sony a7C II imaging system is powered by a 33-megapixel Exmor R full-frame CMOS image sensor and BIONZ XR processor, a combination capable of creating 10-bit 4K images at up to 30 frames per second or the highest continuous shooting rate of 10 frames per second with AF and AE using a mechanical or electronic shutter. Introducing a rear-backlit structure to the camera sensor gives it higher resolution without sacrificing sensitivity. With an ISO 100-51200 range that can be extended to ISO 50-204800, the camera boasts low-light performance with minimal noise and a wide dynamic range.

Video recording with Sony A7C II

Along with a powerful matrix and processor, the Sony a7C offers a powerful set of video features for everyday content creators and videographers.

Recording in 10-bit 4:2:2 format using the advanced XAVC S-I format ensures consistent performance and quality with a bitrate of up to 600 Mbps.

It is possible to record full-frame 4K footage at frame rates up to 30p, up to 60p in 4K with Super35 cropping, as well as Full HD recording up to 120p, with full 1:1 pixel reading without splitting into smaller ones.

Fast recording at 120 frames per second also allows you to record videos in slow motion 4x and 5x with frame rate set to 30p or 24p.

Slow & Quick (S&Q) mode allows you to record 4K videos in specific steps in the range of 1-60 fps. /s and Full HD in the range of 1-120 fps. /s, depending on the format. These settings allow you to slow down the action as well as speed up the slow moving scene.

The S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine gamma curves allow for more than 15 degrees of dynamic range and increase post-production flexibility, including matching video footage from other Sony Cinema Line cameras.

The S-Cinetone profile allows for expressive colors and healthy-looking skin tones that are based on the technology used in professional Cinema Line cameras such as VENICE. This color profile offers natural midrange tones, soft colors and particularly well-controlled lights.

Creative Looks can be added to recorded footage to create a specific mood during recording and minimize the need for editing.

User-created LUT settings and presets can be set to accurately monitor footage or preview a specific look while recording, and can be applied to a camera monitor, EVF, or HDMI output.

The AI processor also uses a new automatic exposure algorithm, Human Pose Estimation, to prioritize exposure areas, which provides a 20% improvement in overall exposure accuracy. The automatic white balance also uses an improved AI processor to help with harsh lighting conditions. Other autofocus features include focus bracketing in up to 299 images with sequentially shifted focus points, low-light focus accuracy up to EV -4.0, focus respiration compensation, autofocus assist, focus mapping, and autofocus focus enhancement.

Additionally, the AI processing unit recognizes and tracks objects during video recording, smoothly automatically cropping to keep the object in a visible position in the frame and facilitating the camera’s difficult operation. This tracking can be custom-located in the frame and adjusted for speed and sensitivity, all at the touch of a finger.

Image stabilization in Sony A7C II

Now offering seven degrees of vibration compensation, the 5-axis pixel-level optical image stabilization system, which counteracts five different types of camera vibrations encountered when shooting from the hand and recording videos, is algorithmically optimized for precise detection and control with pixel accuracy. The AI processing unit also improves communication between the body and the lens, providing more stable framing before taking a photo. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even customized, for critical imaging without blurring caused by camera shakes.

Advanced rendering

For photographers, the a7C II offers a wide range of color rendering and compression for optimal image quality and storage management, including the introduction of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File) format. Users also have the choice between compression and lossless compression options when shooting in raw mode. The AI processing unit also helps achieve better exposure results in automatic mode with appropriate algorithmic adjustments for skin tones, backlighting and white balance. The same Creative Looks presets available in the video are also available when shooting, allowing for additional user-defined configurations with eight adjustable parameters.

Sony A7C II body design and connectivity

The introduction of the front control knob provides an additional level of control and speed at the tip of your index finger and ensures that you won’t have all your thumbs at the moment of peak action.

The camera’s USB output function with UVC/UAC control via a computer enables streaming applications and transmissions with full-frame 4K video at 30 frames per second.

Integrated headphone and 3,5mm microphone ports give you more control over your audio when recording video.

The 2,36m electronic OLED viewfinder offers bright images with high resolution and 70x magnification, allowing you to monitor from your eyes and play sports, while the dedicated 120 frames per second mode provides a smoother view when tracking moving objects.
