🛑 Questions and answers about the towbar and the hook electrical harness:

1. Can any vehicle tow a trailer?

The approval of the vehicle shall determine whether the vehicle can tow a trailer. The record in the car registration certificate in box 0.1 or 02 confirms this. There is also an acceptable total weight for towing.

Some cars cannot tow trailers, but you can install a tow bar in them, e.g. for mounting the bicycle rack.

2. Do I need to mount an electrical harness to my towbar?

Yes, this is a necessary action. The electrical wiring harness provides illumination in the towed trailer or bike rack. In some car models, especially newer ones, you also need a lighting control module.

3. What beam will be suitable: 7PIN or 13PIN?

The 7PIN beam provides basic lighting for the towed trailer (STOP lights, position lights, fog lights or turn signals).

If your vehicle is towing a trailer with a payload of more than 750kg, you will need a 13PIN harness. It is also used for bicycle racks. The 13PIN beam also has reversing lights. This is important information because the Road Traffic Act of 1.08.2016 provides for the requirement to have reversing lights in semi-trailers with a load capacity exceeding 750kg.

Having an electrical adapter, we can change the vehicle socket from 13PIN to 7PIN, and from 7PIN to 13PIN. However, it should be remembered that the reversing lights will not work if we use a 13PIN electrical adapter in a car equipped with a 7PIN socket!

4. Can the towbar be used immediately after installation?

You need to go to the Vehicle Inspection Station to perform a technical examination immediately after installing the towbar. From now on, you can already use a vehicle with a towbar installed. Then, within 30 days of the technical examination, an appropriate entry in the registration certificate and vehicle card should be collected in the Communication Department if the car has it

5. Does the towbar have the necessary approval?

Each towbar from our offer has the EU approval necessary to obtain a technical test at the Vehicle Inspection Station allowing the use of a car with a hook.

Hooks have a plate or approval sticker. It is located on the basis of an electrical socket or a hook beam. The approval document is not required for the technical examination, it is sufficient to confirm it on the data plate.

6. Which beam to choose: universal or dedicated to a specific car model?

Universal harness: When installing such an electrical set, interference with the electrical system is needed, i.e. soldering of appropriate wires and the use of quick couplers. Such a set can be installed in various vehicles, it is also characterized by a relatively low price.

Dedicated harness: This kit has matching wires and connection connectors with the electrical system sockets of the car. However, such a beam often requires coding the vehicle system and costs much more than a universal set.

7. How does it work and how to install a universal electrical harness with a module?

Installation is simple, it should not be difficult, but it is recommended that it is done by a person experienced in this type of work.

The module works in such a way that through the signal cable it detects voltage in the cable, e.g. The direction indicator in the car after turning it on, then another cable running from the module to the electrical socket of the beam directs the voltage to the direction indicator light of the towed trailer. The module copies the operation of the car lights by turning on the twin lights in the trailer. The module must be powered by a fixed plus. To connect the electrical harness, you need to connect the signal wires from the vehicle installation running to the module, i.e. direction indicator lamps, stop lamps, fog lamps, position lamps and, in the case of a 13PIN reversing lamp beam. Then you need to connect the wires running from the module to the socket according to the scheme. Then connect the module to the power supply (tkz “fixed plus”, preferably to some reliable voltage source, e.g. battery). To test the lighting, they must be performed at full load of the electrical socket, e.g. after connecting the trailer. Testing with a meter or probe can give an incorrect reading despite a properly connected installation.

8. Is it necessary to undercut the bumper when installing the towbar?

Some hooks require the bumper to be undercut or removed while the towbar is being installed. Information on whether it is necessary to undercut the bumper and its disassembly can be found in the section with technical data of the offer.

If undercutting is necessary, it is usually located in the lower, invisible part of the bumper, in a place factory prepared for this.

9. Should the tow hook ball be removed when not in use? If so, in what cases?

Disassembly of the towbar ball is necessary only if it covers the license plate or the lighting of the car. In other cases, pulling the hook ball is not necessary.

10. Can the towbar be installed on its own? Where to install it?

Anyone can install a towbar in the car.

You can also go to any car service. However, no document related to the service of mounting the towing hook on the vehicle is required. When we go for a technical examination, the only condition to meet them is a correctly mounted hook with an electrical kit.

11. Do I want to install a towbar? Is there assembly instructions included with the hook?

Yes, it is included with every towing kit as well as electrical harnesses. The kit also includes all the necessary mounting hardware, such as screws, bushings, and washers.

However, before assembly, you should carefully familiarize yourself with the instructor.

12. I want to mount a bike rack in my car. Which tow bar should I choose?

Each approved towbar is suitable for mounting a bicycle rack.

13. I have reversing sensors in my car. Will they “squeal” when reversing?

When towing a trailer, when the reverse gear is turned on, a car equipped with reversing sensors will detect an obstacle behind us. The signal can be turned off with a button or with due care simply ignore the beep. You can also equip the car with a special universal beam with a module with the functions of turning off the reversing sensors. However, such sets are very complicated and should not be assembled on their own.

However, many modern cars do not have the ability to correctly disconnect the reversing sensors through the universal application module. The vehicle control system reports errors after interfering with the parking assistance system. There are rare instances where reversing sensors can read the presence of a tow hook ball as an obstacle. In this case, it is best to equip the vehicle with a towbar with an automatic ball.
