What should you pay attention to when choosing cables?

First of all, remember the principle: the thicker the jumper wires, the better the current conductivity. The thing is that we are primarily talking about the cross-section of the core, not insulation.

The thicker the core, the larger it withstands voltage and there is not too much current loss.

The cross-section of the jumper cable shall be at least:

16 mm2 – for cars with gasoline engines and cable lengths of 4 to 5 meters,

25 mm2 – for cables longer than 5 meters or for cars with diesel engines,

35 mm2 – for cars equipped with large engines or the length of jumper cables exceeds 6 meters.

It is also important that the longer they are, the larger the cross-section of the core is required (greater current resistance is associated with the route of its passage and this in turn is associated with a voltage drop).

Of course, the jumper cables cannot be too short, because it will make it difficult to connect them to the battery, which sometimes is fixed in a hard-to-reach place.

Another important issue is the maximum current conducted. For the cheapest products, this is usually ok. 200A and often not enough (especially for larger cars and those with a diesel engine).

The last element to pay attention to are clamps (crocodiles). If we want to use them for a long time, they should be made of a fairly thick material and even when falling they did not fall apart.
