The diamond paste ceiling is a complete set, thanks to which you will get maximum sharpness from your knife immediately after sharpening on the stones. The set includes a piece of natural cowhide leather and diamond paste with a granulation of 1 μm in an aluminum crucible 2g.
The ceiling is the final stage — the finish. 1 μm diamond paste corresponds to mirror polishing and removes micro-scratches left by stones. At this stage, you don’t need many gradations — you need one, but the right one. Diamond also works effectively on hard stainless and Japanese steels, where traditional pastes often lose their performance.
Why Diamond Grain
Diamond is the hardest material known. Diamond grain knife sharpening paste works faster and more evenly than alumina or chromium oxide based pastes.
With harder steels, these pastes are not able to effectively file them. The diamond is several times harder than them. 1 µm granulation means that abrasive particles have a diameter of one micrometer – this is the equivalent of mirror polishing, removing the smallest scratches and burrs from the cutting edge.
Traditional pastes based on chromium oxide or iron have a hardness of approx. 9 on the Mohs scale. The diamond is 10 — and therefore where other pastes slide over the steel, the diamond actually polishes it.
What you will find in the set
Strop are two pieces of thick leather, glued on a wooden base. The ceiling has two sides: with a mizdra (matte, suede side), on which we apply the paste, and a face (smooth, outer side of the skin), which is used for the final smoothing without paste.
Diamond paste 1 µm in aluminum 2g – sufficient for many months of regular polishing.
Leather applicator for applying paste
Why is it worth polishing on the ceiling?
- Removing burrs - leather ceiling, gently but effectively removes micro burrs after pre-sharpening. Pulling the blade over the ceiling causes them to straighten and then tear off.
- Smoothing edges - polishing makes the cutting edge extremely smooth and uniform. This is the most important step to achieving the best focus.
- Easy to focus - you can use the ceiling even before each start of work. Without any preparation, you simply move the knife several times and straighten the micro-pollutants from the previous use.
- Cleaner cutting - polished blade passes through the material without resistance, leaving smooth, clean edges
How to apply paste
1. Use the included piece of leather to apply.
2. Apply a small amount in several places to the mizdra.
3. With an applicator or finger, spread a thin layer of paste.
Diamond paste for sharpening knives does not wear out quickly. One layer on the ceiling can be used for multiple polishing sessions. We apply a new portion only when the skin clearly dries and stops giving noticeable resistance when dragging the blade.
How to polish on the ceiling
Always move the blade towards the back (backwards) so as not to cut the skin. After several movements, black marks will appear on the skin – this is a sign that the diamond works and collects steel. Use the smooth side to finally polish the blade. After achieving the right effect, wipe the knife with a cloth and enjoy perfect sharpness.
EXPERT GUIDANCE
What to do when...
1. ...after polishing, I still see scratches on the blade? 1 micron paste is used for mirror finish (Mirror Finish). If after using it you still see deep scratches, it means that they are a remnant of the earlier stages of sharpening (too thick stones).
Solution: You need to go back to water stones with a higher gradation (e.g. 3000-5000) and lead the smooth edge out there before you go to the ceiling. The ceiling is a perfect finish, but it will not even out deeper scratches.
2. ...the knife instead of sharper, seems more blunt? This is a classic edge rounding error. This happens when you use too much downforce or too much angle. The leather is elastic – if you press hard, it will “flank” the blade and round the very tip of the cutting edge.
Solution: Reduce downforce. Let diamond paste work, not the strength of your hands. Often the weight of the knife alone is enough.
3. ...the alloy has become completely black and slippery? This is a natural process – black is grated steel (work). However, if the layer of dirt is so thick that the ceiling stops “taking” and only glides over the metal, it’s time to clean.
Solution: Wipe the ceiling with a cloth and add paste.
