How does it work?

AirTag emits a secured Bluetooth signal that is detected by nearby devices belonging to the Find service network. Devices send AirTag location information to the iCloud, which in turn is connected to the Find app. You open the app and immediately see AirTag on the map. The entire process is anonymous and encrypted to protect privacy. And at the same time efficient, so it consumes little energy and cellular data.

Lost mode makes it easy to find.

AirTag, like other Apple devices, can be switched to Lost mode. And when it is detected by a network device, you will automatically get a notification. You can also configure it so that the person who finds it gets your contact information when you tap on the AirTag with an NFC-enabled smartphone. It’s the same technology that allows you to pay with your phone.

Built-in privacy protection.

You and only you can see where your AirTag is. Data and location history are not stored in its memory. Devices that provide encrypted information about its location at each stage also remain anonymous. So even Apple doesn’t know where your AirTag is, and it doesn’t know the device’s identification information to help you find it.

AirTag inherently makes unwanted tracking difficult. When someone else’s AirTag gets tangled up in your stuff, your iPhone will detect it and send you a notification. If, despite the search, you cannot find it, AirTag will start playing sound to guide you.

What if you find yourself in the company of someone who has an AirTag, or even a group of such people, say on a train? No problem. The alert only triggers when the AirTag loses the person it belongs to.
