Particle size of aerosol produced

When choosing an inhaler, you need to pay attention to the size of the molecules that the nebulizer produces. The smaller the diameter of the molecule, the further the drug will reach in the airways. Large particles of approx. 8 microns penetrate the throat, nasopharynx and will not reach deep into the respiratory system. It is optimally assumed that in order for respiratory nebulisation to be effective, the nebulizer should produce particles in sizes from 1 to 5 microns.

The most important technical parameters

The most important indicators for the patient when choosing an inhaler are information about the size of aerosol particles: MMAD and respirable fraction (FR).

MMAD is the average size of aerosol particles. I mean. At least half of the molecules produced by the nebuliser have a diameter less than or equal to the given value, e.g. MMAD = 2 μm means that a minimum of 50 % of the molecules produced by the nebuliser are less than or equal to 2 microns (µm).

Respirable fraction (FR) is the percentage of aerosol particles whose diameter is less than 5 μm (microns), i.e. those that reach the lower parts of the respiratory system.

For example, the respirable fraction: 76% means that 76% of particles with a diameter of less than 5 μm are present in the aerosol. The best in this respect are inhalers in which the respirable fraction is at least 70-80%.
