DCF77 is a radio time standard broadcast in the long wave band at 77,5 kHz from Mainflingen, about 25 km southeast of Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

This signal is stabilized by a caesium atomic clock located in the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) laboratories in Braunschweig. The transmitter in Mainflingen transmits at a power of 50 kW, thanks to which the signal range extends within a radius of up to 2000 km from the transmitter and covers Western and Central Europe.

Since January 1998, a 50-kilowatt solid-state transmitter has been in use. A tube transmitter of the same power that was used previously remains available as a backup device and is connected to a replacement antenna that can be used in the event of a failure or maintenance. Both transmitting antennas are vertical omnidirectional antennas with focused capacity. The replacement antenna has a height of 200 m, while the working one has a working capacity of 150 m, but a larger focused capacity. Both antennas are located in a common antenna field and emit roughly the same power. It is assumed that the EIRP is about 30-35 kW[1].

The theoretical accuracy of the atomic clock used is the difference of 1 second per 1 million years of operation.

The DCF77 signal is used wherever accurate time synchronization is needed, for example in railways, radio and television stations, computer systems, communications and industry. The DCF77 signal is also used to synchronize home clocks and even some wristwatches. Devices using the DCF77 signal can automatically switch from daylight saving time to winter time and vice versa. Due to the common time zone with Germany, the DCF77 signal can be successfully used in Poland.
