What to know after buying a pulse oximeter:
- The pulse oximeter is used for indicative, non-invasive measurement of blood saturation (SpO₂) and heart rate. Saturation informs about the degree of oxygen saturation of hemoglobin.
- In adults, SpO₂ values considered normal are most often in the range of 95 to 99%. Results of 90 to 94 percent may need to be observed, while values below 90 percent should be consulted with healthcare professionals, especially if accompanied by additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, bruising of the lips, malaise or fatigue.
- The device works by analyzing the absorption of light passing through the tissue. The accuracy of the measurement can be influenced by m.in. movement, cold hands, nail polish or weak blood supply to the finger. For a more reliable result, it is recommended to perform the measurement on a warm finger, without movement and – if possible – without nail polish.
- Measurements are indicative and do not replace medical evaluation or medical diagnosis.
