How does a pulse oximeter work?

The pulse oximeter measures the degree of absorption of radiation by tissues. The device measures two different wavelengths. Everything is measured by pulse oximetry. What does that mean?

This method involves transdermal determination of blood oxygen saturation. It is a measurement of the absorption of red and infrared radiation by blood cells in the capillaries. Both radiations differ in their length.

What does the result of the pulse oximeter mean?

The pulse oximeter measures a signal that consists of two parts: a constant and a variable (pulsing). The variable part is responsible for describing the absorption in pulsating arterial blood. The resulting dimension shows the extent to which hemoglobin is saturated with oxygen (SpO2).

The device also performs heart rate measurement. If our saturation remains above 95,99%, it means that it is good. If the result is 94% or lower, it means hypoxia. The procedure itself is non-invasive.

Which pulse oximeter to choose? Finger or stationary?

It is worth mentioning that we distinguish two types of devices of this type. The first is the so-called finger pulse oximeter. It has a sensor that is placed on the finger of a person ready for examination. We use this type of device in the field when we are away from home, at work or on vacation. Of course, the person using the device must be trained to use the pulse oximeter correctly.

The second type is a stationary pulse oximeter. It is used in hospitals and is significantly different from its smaller colleague. It has more measuring functions. With its help, we can measure pressure or breathing. It is placed on the finger and earlobe.

Such tests are performed on people who are at risk of low partial pressure of oxygen in the blood. This is associated with respiratory diseases such as asthma or obstructive lung disease. It is also recommended to conduct a study for people working and practicing sports at high altitudes.

Pulse oximeter and coronavirus

According to some doctors, pulse oximeters can be used to detect COVID-19 early before severe symptoms appear. Hospitals use pulse oximeters to test patients and staff for low blood oxygen levels, which may mean that a person has the coronavirus. For this reason, since March 2020 we have seen a huge increase in the popularity of pulse oximeters outside the medical community.
