Pulse oximeter is an electronic device used for non-invasive transdermal measurement, oxygen saturation (saturation). At the same time, it also records the heart rate (pulse).

It works by measuring the absorption of radiation from two different wavelengths – red and infrared – by red blood cells in the capillaries.

Based on the measurement, the degree of oxygen saturation of hemoglobin (SpO2) is calculated.

The calculation algorithm is usually constructed in a way that makes the results independent of the thickness of the patient’s tissue and other individual factors (such as nail polish, scars, anatomical anomalies).

The pulse oximeter consists of a central unit and a sensor.

The pulse oximeter sensor is usually placed on the finger of the hand. Sometimes it is put on the toe, earlobe, and in newborns on the foot or wrist (this requires a different type of sensor).

Depending on the needs, disposable and reusable sensors are used.

For diagnosis, the patient only needs to insert his fingertip into the sensor and the measured hemoglobin saturation will be shown on the display or screen of the pulse oximeter.
