The Ford viscometer cup is a vessel used to measure the viscosity of liquids, e.g. liquid paints, varnishes. The shape of the capacity and diameter of the hole in the bottom depends on the type of cup. Viscosity is measured by filling the cup with the measured liquid and allowing the liquid to flow freely through the hole in the bottom of the cup. The time of complete liquid outflow given in seconds is directly proportional to the viscosity of the liquid. Since the viscosity of the liquid decreases with increasing temperature, it was adopted to measure the same conditions:

• Pressure 1,01325•10-1 MPa

The outflow cup is particularly useful when preparing paints and varnishes for spray application with an air gun, where it is important to prepare a working mixture diluted to a specific viscosity. The mug is also used in printing, e.g. for measuring the viscosity of dispersion varnishes.
