Nakajima Ki-43 II Hayabusa 70087

The Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa (Falcon), designated by the Allies as “Oscar”, was the primary fighter aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Army for most of World War II. It was the equivalent of such constructions as Spitfire or Messerschmitt Bf 109, being constantly developed and produced in subsequent versions. Although it often remains in the shadow of the famous Mitsubishi A6M “Zero”, Hayabusa played a key role in the battles over China, Burma, Malaya, the Philippines and New Guinea.

The aircraft was designed in the late 30s. in Nakajima plants, based on experience with the previous Ki-27. The design emphasized lightness, excellent maneuverability and very good elevation, at the expense of armor and firepower. This was in line with the Japanese doctrine of maneuvering combat, requiring high piloting skills. In the early days of the war, the Ki-43 towered over many opponents, but over time gave way to newer constructions such as the Ki-84 Hayate. Nevertheless, it remained in use until the end of the conflict, also in special units.
