Bestway filter glass is a modern alternative to classic filter sand – you pour it exactly where the sand has been so far, and you do not have to do anything in the installation.

Granulation is a mixture of fractions of 0,5 to 1,2 mm ("Mix" according to the manufacturer's designation). Such grain size dispersion allows the deposit to lay more densely than with a uniform fraction – finer grains fill the spaces between larger ones. Combined with the sharp edges of crushed glass and the negative surface charge of glass, this results in an effective capture of the fine slurry that round, smooth sand often passes through.

The second advantage is the structure of the grain itself. Quartz sand is porous – bacteria and biofilm are deposited in micropores, which makes the deposit “live its own life” over time. The glass is non-porous: the dirt has nowhere to anchor, so the bed stays cleaner and rinses out more easily. Over time, the sand also clumps into solids and creates channels through which dirty water returns to the pool – this problem occurs to a much lesser extent with glass.

What does this glass look like?

It is worth knowing what to expect when opening the package:

How to properly cover the filter – step by step

1. Secure nozzles

🟡 make sure the central pipe and bottom nozzles ("fingers") are in place

🟡 secure the pipe inlet (e.g. tape or cup) so that glass particles do not get into the installation

2. Pour some water

🟡 pour water into approx. 1/3 of the height of the tank before pouring the deposit

🟡 this will absorb the falling glass and protect the plastic nozzles from damage

3. Put glass

🟡 select the quantity according to the instructions of your pump

🟡 do not overflow – too much can worsen the flow of water

4. Do the rinsing

🟡 first backwash, then backwash (Rinse)

The expert’s eye – why is it worth it?

Filter glass is one of those changes that you will feel right away. It’s not just about the size of the grain — 0,5 to 1,2 mm is a range similar to pool sand — it’s about how this grain is built. Crushed glass has sharp edges and irregular shapes that mechanically stop the suspension, and its non-porous surface does not allow the biofilm to anchor. Quartz sand is the opposite: round, porous, over time more rounded and less effective.

The second advantage is the preservation of the deposit over time. The sand clumps into solids and creates channels through which dirty water returns straight to the pool — and you see cloudy water despite the pump running. Glass retains structure much longer.
