Dune HD Max 8K is the flagship, top-shelf multimedia player in the 8K series from Dune HD – a leading manufacturer of high-end network players, successfully offering its products to customers around the world for over a dozen years.
Like previous 8K series models, the player is based on the latest Amlogic S928X-K/J processor. A new feature is the device's TCXO clock circuit and a dedicated high-quality audio playback path with a linear power supply. The new, full-size Dune HD Max 8K housing allows for installation in a standard 1U rack cabinet. The player, like previous models, has also received a license and support for the Dolby Vision standard.
The player offers video quality at the level of Hi-end equipment, including support for 8K 60Hz with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, YouTube 8K HDR, full 4K BD menu playback, multi-channel HD audio with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, Gigabit Ethernet and efficient WiFi 6, USB 3.0 ports (including one USB DAC), HDMI 2.1a output, 8GB RAM and 64GB internal flash memory. Compatible with DSD and FLAC passthrough to PCM files.
The player runs on the manufacturer's proprietary Dune HD system based on Linux, and the Android system (TV version) is an additional and parallel system. Thanks to this solution, we get a player that, like the best Dune HD models from years ago, can easily handle all video and audio codecs, but also offers a very fast user interface and a perfectly working application for controlling from mobile devices – Dune Control.
The application allows you not only to control the device (remote control function), but also to navigate network and local drives and use other network functions. What is new is that when the device is in standby mode, the network functions are active - which allows you to browse the USB/SATA drives connected to the player from the network, and the Dune HD Control application can wake the device from standby mode. Browsing music resources can therefore be done 100% without the TV being turned on, and the device itself works great as an audio player, m.in SACD and DSF files on the HDMI output, as well as many others.
Dune HD players are very fast network players dedicated to home cinema enthusiasts and music lovers. They are a great alternative for users discouraged by Android, thanks to being fully based on the manufacturer's proprietary Dune HD OS system. However, the manufacturer's option to use the Android TV system running in parallel does not deprive the player of many essential multimedia functions available from other manufacturers.
The most important features of Dune HD Max 8K:
Full-size housing
- The classic 43cm dimension, within the 1U rack standard, will perfectly fit into the shelf or stand for audio/video equipment in your home theater
Linear power supply
- Advanced linear power supply with custom magnetically shielded toroidal transformer provides very clean and quiet power supply for all components. This helps to reduce vibration and noise on all A/V outputs, minimize the transmission of vibrations and noise from the media player to the receiving A/V equipment, and thus improve sound and picture quality.
CXO clock layout
- The media player uses an advanced, ultra-low-noise, high-precision TCXO clock layout. This TCXO (Quartz Oscillator with Temperature Compensation) chip provides a very clean and precise clock (much more precise than a standard clock) for A/V processing circuits in a media player. The system is powered by a dedicated low-noise power circuit. This also helps to reduce vibration and noise on all A/V outputs and raise the sound and picture quality to the highest level.
Digital Hi-Fi output and XMOS chip (No compatibility with Multi-channel files: DSD/flac. SACD files on Hi-Fi I2S and S/PDIF, Coaxial outputs are played as Stereo).
- For fans of Hi-Fi audio, the media player includes special digital Hi-Fi audio outputs (coaxial S/PDIF and I2S-E) based on the XMOS chip. The XMOS chip provides additional isolation of the generated audio signal from other components, which helps to achieve super-clean sound with very low noise and very low vibration.
Improved analog audio output
- For users who prefer analog audio, the media player has an improved hardware design of analog audio output. The DAC block of the media processor is powered by a dedicated low-noise power supply system. Combined with a linear power supply and TCXO chip, this provides much better sound quality.
Dedicated port for USB DAC
- For audio lovers who prefer to connect an external DAC via USB, the media player is equipped with a dedicated USB audio output port. This USB port has a special hardware design and uses special components to filter electrical noise. This helps minimize noise transmission from Dune to an external DAC via USB and improve sound quality. The gold-plated connector prevents oxidation and ensures excellent contact despite the passage of time.
New series of state-of-the-art 8K players from Dune HD
- The new flagship 8K series is based on the latest S928X multimedia processor, has full 8K support, very powerful hardware and many other advantages. At the same time, this series retains the most important features of the RTD1619DR models (except BD3D). Superior picture quality, Dolby Vision VS10 technology, full support for all HD audio formats, advanced support for Dolby Vision file playback, support for full menu in ISO images and disk structures.
Hi-End S928X multimedia processor with 8K, AV1, VS10
- The media player uses the Hi-End version of the latest S928X multimedia processor with Dolby Vision VS10 engine. It is Amlogic’s most powerful and advanced multimedia processor. It delivers exceptional image quality, supports true 8K60 decoding and true 8K60 output, includes a new AV1 video codec, and has the highest overall performance.
Full 8K video support
- 8K is a next-generation video format that offers 4 times more pixels than 4K. The 8K format provides the most immersive viewing experience and delivers a truly smooth and clear picture. The media player supports both 8K60 HDR video decoding and 8K60 HDR video output. A media player can reduce the resolution of 8K content to any resolution (downscale) and increase the resolution of any content to 8K (upscale). 8K HDR YouTube is supported.
Video codec AV1
- The media player supports the new AV1 video codec, which helps you get up to 50% improvement in video quality without increasing video bit rates (or requires up to 50% lower bit rates for the same video quality). This new video codec is already being used by YouTube and will become increasingly important for compatibility with various video services and content sources.
Highest performance
- The media player has a very powerful CPU and GPU. The CPU includes four ARM A55 2,0 GHz cores, a “large” ARM A76 1,9 GHz core (with very high performance), as well as an additional core for the system. CPU performance is up to 2x faster than RTD1619DR. The GPU has been upgraded to the Mali G57 version. Combined with super-fast LPDDR4X and super-fast eMMC, this gives you lightning-fast overall system performance. The total score of Antutu (benchmark for Android devices) exceeds 300 000 points, which is much more than in the previous generation media players.
8 GB RAM
- This massive amount of memory provides the best performance even in the most intense use cases. The 64-bit Linux kernel enables the efficient use of 8 GB of RAM to cache code and system data and applications. Applications start, run, and switch faster. More memory can be used to cache graphics, further improving UI performance.
64 GB Flash memory
- Huge storage space for the most demanding applications, for system needs (such as storing movie posters) and for internal storage that can be used for any purpose. For example, you can store media files in internal storage and even share them on your local network through the built-in SMB file server.
Dolby Vision and HDR10+
- The media player supports not only HDR technology (also supported by previous models), but also the latest and most advanced Dolby Vision and HDR10+. In conventional HDR technology, the brightness range is set at the beginning of the film and does not change over time, so extremely dark and completely bright scenes lose their detail. In Dolby Vision and HDR10+, the brightness range may vary between frames, so maximum image detail is ensured even in scenes where dark or light elements dominate.
Advanced Dolby Vision VS10 video processor
- The Dolby Vision VS10 video processing engine delivers the best picture quality when playing any type of content (SDR, HDR, Dolby Vision) on receivers that support SDR, HDR and Dolby Vision. In particular, it improves the conversion quality between Dolby Vision, HDR and SDR. This gives you benefits even when using the player with TVs that do not support Dolby Vision, including plasma TVs, and especially when using projectors.
Dolby Vision 7 FEL profile
- The player supports direct playback of Dolby Vision profile 7 FEL double-track and double-layer files. This is the most advanced Dolby Vision format. The media player plays video in this format using both tracks/layers. Important Dolby Vision information from the second track/layer (Dolby Vision RPU metadata) is transmitted to the TV along with the video data from the first track/layer. The video data transmitted uses 10-bit color depth — the maximum color depth supported by OLED panels on OLED TVs, i.e. Take full advantage of OLED TVs. Combined with the full use of Dolby Vision metadata, this gives you an excellent Dolby Vision picture on your TV screen.
Wide range of supported file formats with Dolby Vision
- Dolby Vision support for all popular formats (BDMV, BD ISO, MKV, MP4, TS, M2TS) and for all popular profiles (P5, P7 MEL and FEL, P8). Such extensive support for Dolby Vision formats puts Dune HD players (alongside Zidoo) among the most advanced media players on the market.
Play ISO images/folder structure with Dolby Vision
- Max 8K supports direct playback of full Blu-ray images (BMDV and ISO) in Dolby Vision format (MEL and FEL). Extended Dolby Vision metadata is used and transmitted to the TV to improve picture quality. This is possible thanks to the unique video playback and output engine created by the manufacturer – Dune HD.
Full support for HD audio
- The media player can output all HD audio formats (up to Dolby TrueHD and DTS X) to HDMI in bitstream passthrough mode. In addition, the media player can decode all HD audio formats to multi-channel PCM (up to 7.1).
Sound playback with original sampling rate
- The media player can play high-quality music files and transmit audio to HDMI and S/PDIF while maintaining the original audio sampling rate. Sampling rates from 44,1 to 192 kHz are supported.
3,5” HDD pocket
- The hot-swap module installed in the front panel allows for simple and quick installation of the SATA 3,5″ HDD. The player supports drives up to 20 TB. No tools are needed to install the hard drive. The installed disk can also be accessed from the local network via the built-in SMB file server.
Vibration-isolated hard drive pocket
- The hard drive pocket uses a special design to isolate the vibration of the drive from the housing. It is completely isolated from the housing and attached to it with special shock absorbers. This significantly reduces noise from the hard drive.
- Entire case as a heatsink for super-efficient silent cooling
All housing as heat sink for super-efficient and quiet cooling
- The S928X processor is a high-performance processor. It requires very efficient cooling to achieve maximum efficiency without any slowdown. The Dune HD Max 8K player implements the best approach to passive cooling, which uses the entire metal housing as a huge heat sink. Heat is transferred very efficiently from the processor directly to the metal housing using special heat transfer elements.
Premium 120 mm fan for additional cooling of the hard drive
- In addition to the passive cooling solution, the media player also has a quiet fan that helps ensure the longevity of the HDD at maximum load. The fan is a well-known 120mm ultra-quiet premium fan from Noctua.
Android 11
- Dune HD Max 8K has – in parallel to the native operating system Dune HD OS – Android version 11, which is ideal for supporting other multimedia functions of the device. This guarantees convenient operation of the latest applications from Google Play and other sources.
Other key advantages of Dune HD Max 8K compared to the competition:
Best-in-class DVD/Blu-ray playback
- Dune HD players have the most refined support for various formats (DVD/BD ISO file or BDMV directory) and come from any source – local drive (USB, SATA) or network location (SMB, NFS). The special motor helps to ensure smooth playback of the entire film without any interruptions in sound/image, even when playing videos with a complicated structure.
Automatic frame rate/resolution switching
- The player can automatically switch the frame rate and output resolution to match the content being played. This helps ensure absolutely smooth video playback and uses the best way to scale video resolution (scaling resolution by media player or TV).
Smooth refresh rate switching
- Dune HD players use their own mechanisms to reduce interruptions when changing refresh rates and resolutions, which takes place at the beginning of the video. Most other players tend to set these parameters after playback has started, which reveals itself as an unpleasant flickering image
DSD Multichannel and other advanced music formats
- You can play music in a variety of advanced formats, including multi-channel FLAC, WavPack, APE, ALAC, and even multi-channel Super Audio CD (SACD). SACD music files, encoded using the advanced DSD audio codec, are supported in all common formats (ISO, DFF, DSF), including both stereo and multichannel files, including files that use DST compression. Multi-channel DSD files can be output to HDMI as multi-channel PCM. DSD stereo files can be output to HDMI and S/PDIF as stereo PCM.
Widevine L1 and premium video services (there is no guarantee of VOD services in 4K quality – no license)
- Widevine Level 1 DRM (the most advanced DRM level) support allows you to watch premium online content in the highest quality available: HD and Ultra HD. Competitive players without this feature only offer SD resolutions.
Optimized system
- Since the media player is not Google Android TV certified, the operating system in the player is optimized to eliminate unnecessary workloads and limitations. In particular, the system does not create unnecessary Android folders on connected hard drives, system performance is not reduced by indexing Android files on connected hard drives, etc.
Dune HD Android Playback Accelerator
- This unique technology ensures that Android minimizes the impact on CPU resource management and maintains a supply of processing power in favor of smooth video playback in the highest quality
The Linux-based Dune HD operating system
- The player uses a unique hybrid operating system, which consists of the Linux-based native Dune HD OS (providing smooth media playback) and Android OS (to support applications under this system), which interact with each other.
Environment Dune HD
- Based on the open source Dune HD SDK and APIs, you can use a variety of TV-optimized applications, plug-ins, extensions, GUI skins, collection management solutions, and integrations with home automation systems.
User interface Dune HD
- The famous Dune HD user interface, developed and refined for more than 12 years, specially optimized for use on TV screens and operation with a standard remote control, tuned for the best possible usability, makes the use of the media player easy and convenient

- The “My Collection” feature organizes videos collected by the user in an attractive library. The rich film encyclopedia provides information about hundreds of works with detailed descriptions, poster thumbnails, links and tags linking to information about people, trailers and links to online video services. Extensive browser automatically identifies videos
Mobile application Dune HD
- The unique Dune HD (Dune Control) mobile application for iOS and Android mobile devices provides full access to all the functions of the Dune HD media player in a very convenient way. Completely replaces the standard remote control, allows you to view and select multimedia content directly on your mobile device (the menu displayed on your mobile device reflects the menu displayed on your TV screen) and includes a Now Playing section for convenient control of media playback
Smart home
- Dune HD Pro 4K allows for IP control and multiple integration options with Smart Home and home automation systems such as Control4 and Crestron
User support and regular updates of the firmware Dune (firmware)
- Dune HD is famous for the fact that it has been tracking user reviews for many years and providing regular updates. For example, for some old models, software updates with additional features have been available for over 10 years. This is possible thanks to the unique “single code database” approach, which means that the firmware for all Dune HD models is based on the same core (continuously developed and improved according to user feedback)
Other important features of Dune HD Max 8K
WiFi 6 and Gigabit Ethernet network card
- The latest Wi-Fi standard provides better wireless performance and coverage, while a wired home network connection ensures fast data transfer and smooth, high-throughput video playback.
