Safe Guidelines for Using Jumper Cables:
- The parameters of the jumper cables must be suitable for the amount of current drawn by the starter of the vehicle being started.
- The cables must be placed in a safe location in both the vehicle being started and the assisting vehicle, ensuring they do not come into contact with moving engine parts.
- The cable insulation must not be damaged, as this can lead to a short circuit with the vehicle's chassis and cause a fire.
Connecting Cables and Starting the Vehicle
Check your vehicle's manual for any contraindications to starting the vehicle as described below, which could cause damage to certain electronic components of the vehicle.
- Turn off the engines of both the vehicle being started and the assisting vehicle.
- The gear shift levers of both vehicles should be in the neutral position.
- Attach the red (+) clamp of the jumper cable to the (+) terminal of the discharged battery, and the other end of the red clamp to the (+) terminal of the assisting vehicle's battery.
- Attach the black (−) clamp of the jumper cable to the (−) terminal of the discharged battery, and the other end of the black clamp to the (−) terminal of the assisting vehicle's battery.
- Start the starter of the vehicle with the discharged battery for a period no longer than 3–5 seconds.
- If the vehicle's engine does not start, the attempt should be repeated several times, observing approximately 1 minute breaks between attempts.
- If 5 attempts to start the vehicle are unsuccessful, the vehicle should be taken for repair at a Vehicle Service Station.
- Disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order.
